VOICED : Black South African winemaker shakes up industry

Aslina Wines, founded by the first black female wine producer in the country, has been making waves in the wine industry. The company, named after the founder's grandmother, produces Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. The founder emphasizes the fulfillment of working with nature in wine production. Historically, black people have been laborers in the industry, but black-owned labels are emerging, though they still play a small role. Starting a wine label and vineyard is a significant investment, often beginning with the label. Aslina Wines aims to produce 18,000 bottles this year, targeting the growing black middle-class market.
