Koalas are now classified as endangered in much of eastern Australia due to threats like wildfires, deforestation, drought, and disease. Conservation organizations warn of a significant population decline over the past two decades, with numbers dropping from 185,000 to 92,000 between 2001 and 2021. Despite being recognized as vulnerable a decade ago, habitat destruction continues, with over 25,000 hectares cleared. The government aims to provide greater protection to these iconic marsupials.
