Servando Gómez, known as La Tuta, was arrested as the last free leader of the Caballeros Templarios cartel. The cartel terrorized Michoacán with kidnappings, extortion, and murders, often under the protection of corrupt local authorities. This led to the rise of autodefensas, self-defense groups formed by rural communities. The government launched an offensive that dismantled most of the cartel's leadership, except for Gómez, who was pursued until his capture.
