Celecoxib (Celebrex) and other COX-2 Selective Inhibitors

The video discusses non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and their effects on cyclooxygenase enzymes, Cox-1 and Cox-2. While Cox-1 is always active, Cox-2 is activated by inflammation. Cox-2 selective inhibitors were developed to reduce side effects, but they still cause gastric issues and increase blood clotting, leading to heart attack and stroke risks. The Vioxx recall highlighted these dangers. Currently, Celecoxib is the only Cox-2 selective NSAID in the US, with ongoing research to improve selectivity and safety.
