The Fourth Crusade, initially aimed at Egypt, was redirected to Constantinople due to financial issues with Venice. The Crusaders, involved in Byzantine politics, eventually sacked Constantinople in 1204, leading to the division of the Byzantine Empire into the Latin Empire and other territories.
