NASA | NASA Aids in Medical Imaging

NASA's hierarchical segmentation software, originally designed for Earth studies, is now being used in medical imaging to enhance the interpretation of mammograms, ultrasounds, and other medical imagery. Developed by James C. Tilton at Goddard, the software allows for automatic isolation of specific image features, providing more accurate analysis. Bartron Medical Imaging LLC has adapted this technology into a product called MED-SEG, which aims to improve the detection of abnormalities and reduce human error in medical diagnostics. The company is also working on a 3D version of the software and plans to start clinical trials to further develop its diagnostic capabilities.
