On Monday, Syrians protested in Damascus against the imminent US military action. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad warned the US of consequences if they attacked Syria, denying the use of chemical weapons. This was his first interview since President Obama called on Congress to approve military force against Syria for alleged chemical weapon use. Meanwhile, in Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Syrian counterpart Walid al-Mualem, advocating for peace talks and warning that Western attacks could escalate terrorism. Lavrov also urged Syria to place its chemical arsenal under international control to prevent Western intervention.
