The Taliban announced a three-day truce for Eid al-Fitr, supported by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. Previously, the Taliban rejected a ceasefire offer during Ramadan. Insurgents were instructed to ensure security and avoid offensive actions unless attacked. The truce follows intensified Taliban attacks after a US agreement for troop withdrawal. This is the first Taliban truce since 2001. US negotiator Salmai Khalilzad welcomed the truce as a significant opportunity.
