The current subsidized rate is 14 pesos, while non-subsidized users pay 49 pesos. The cost of generation will rise from 30 to 320 pesos per megawatt hour. The government justifies this by citing the electrical system's near-collapse. This decision has sparked protests against the government, which is also facing backlash for public sector job cuts. Since January, 12,000 to 20,000 public sector workers have been laid off. The government claims these jobs were politically motivated hires.
