Malnutrition is a critical global health issue, affecting even those with sufficient energy intake if their diet lacks essential vitamins and minerals. It is particularly severe in developing countries, where deficiencies in iron, vitamin A, and zinc are leading causes of death. Extreme malnutrition can result in marasmus, characterized by emaciation, or kwashiorkor, marked by bloating due to water retention. Addressing malnutrition sustainably and equitably is a major global challenge, especially with a growing population.
