The story of Oedipus begins with a prophecy that he will kill his father and marry his mother. Despite efforts to avoid this fate, Oedipus unknowingly fulfills the prophecy by killing his father, King Laius, and marrying his mother, Jocasta. The truth is revealed during a plague in Thebes, leading to Jocasta's suicide and Oedipus's self-blinding and exile. In his later years, Oedipus accepts his fate and dies peacefully.
