United Methodist Church Expected To Split Over LGBTQ Disagreement

The Methodist Church faced a significant rift over ELG rights, particularly regarding gay marriage. At the Methodist General Conference, a proposal to ease restrictions on same-sex weddings was rejected, causing internal conflict. Some regional conferences ordained ELG individuals, and several congregations began leaving the church. A new proposal was announced to create a Traditionalist Methodist denomination with $25 million in funding, allowing the remaining United Methodist Church to have more flexibility on same-sex weddings. The plan is expected to be approved at the next General Conference in May.
