Judo was first introduced in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, initially allowing only men to participate with four weight classes: lightweight, middleweight, heavyweight, and open weight. Over time, the number of weight classes expanded to six or seven, and women were officially allowed to compete after the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Additionally, Judo was introduced in the 1988 Seoul Paralympics, broadening its reach and inclusivity.
