El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele announced a plan to encircle major cities with police and military forces to capture gang members. This initiative is part of the government's Control Territorial plan against gangs. The state of emergency, in effect since March 27, allows detentions without a court order and has been extended until mid-December. Despite criticism from human rights organizations, the government claims it has led to the arrest of 58,000 suspected gang members.
