Weather Things: Hurricane Formation

Hurricanes are large storms forming near the equator in warm ocean waters. They develop from tropical waves and disturbances, progressing to tropical depressions and storms, which are named for easier identification. Naming is coordinated internationally, with some names retired due to severe impacts. Tropical storms bring both benefits, like rain for agriculture, and threats, such as flooding and coastal erosion. They can also produce tornadoes. When wind speeds reach 74 mph, they become hurricanes.
