The Muelle de Balongo in Rio de Janeiro, a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status, was a key arrival point for nearly a million African slaves. This site, discovered during preparations for the 2016 Olympics, highlights Brazil's significant African heritage, as the country received over four million slaves, representing 40% of those brought to the Americas. The recognition of this site urges Brazil to acknowledge its African roots, with the largest black population outside Africa. UNESCO's decision on its status will be made in Poland.
