VOICED : El pez tequila se salva de la extinción y sensibiliza a comunidad en México

The tequila fish, an endemic species from western Mexico, faced near extinction in the 1990s due to habitat fragmentation, pollution, and competition. Scientists preserved the species in aquariums and began reintroduction efforts in 2014, led by the Universidad Michoacana. Currently, there are an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 individuals in the wild. The Guardianes del Río group raises awareness about the importance of protecting local flora and fauna. The tequila fish, named after Mexico's iconic liquor, is unique for being viviparous, with well-developed offspring nourished by a structure similar to a human umbilical cord.
