In October 1909, the National Training School for women and girls was founded by Nannie Helen Burroughs to provide job training for African American women. Despite facing racial barriers, Burroughs, an educator and activist, established the school with community support. The curriculum included both academic and vocational training. Burroughs dedicated her life to advocating for black women until her death in 1961. Her legacy continues as a pioneer for African American women's rights, with the school renamed in her honor in 1964.
