FDR Salutes Captain Hewitt T Wheless

A young American pilot, flying a Flying Fortress, successfully bombed six Japanese transports despite his plane being damaged and crew members injured or killed during an attack by 18 Japanese fighter planes. The pilot managed to bring the plane back safely. The president recognized his bravery, awarding him the Distinguished Service Cross. The pilot humbly credited his crew for their efforts during the mission.
