Iraqi forces continued their efforts to reclaim Mosul's old city from ISIS, where many civilians remain trapped. The old city, located on the western bank of the Tigris River, is a densely populated maze, making it difficult for armored vehicles to enter and posing risks to civilians. Residents resort to bicycles due to blocked roads. ISIS has burned cars and blocked streets, and the Al-Nuri Mosque holds significant importance for them, as it was where their leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, made his only public appearance in 2014. The conflict has led to the displacement of 180,000 people, and the Iraqi government, supported by a US-led coalition, launched an offensive in October to reclaim Mosul.
