Aphrodisias, a Hellenistic city in Western Anatolia, Turkey, was named after the Greek goddess Aphrodite. The city, later known as Steropolis, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. The original theater, dating from the late Hellenistic period, was renovated between 38 and 28 BC by G Julius Zolos, a freed slave of Octavian. The renovation was dedicated to Aphrodite and the people. In the 2nd century, the theater underwent modifications to accommodate gladiatorial events, including deepening the orchestra and adding protective structures.
