Beware the Bug Spit: How Spittlebugs Accidentally Doom Plants

Spittlebugs, also known as froghoppers, are small insects that feed on xylem sap, a nutrient-poor liquid in plants. While their feeding can damage plant health, the real threat is their ability to spread the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which causes deadly plant diseases. This bacterium clogs the plant's xylem, leading to nutrient deficiency and plant death. The disease has severely impacted crops like olives, with no cure available. Research is ongoing to identify which spittlebug species spread the bacterium and to develop prevention methods.
