In early 20th century Brazil, concentration camps were established to prevent starving farmers from migrating to Ceará's capital due to severe droughts. These camps, predating the Nazi era, housed over 15,000 people in dire conditions, with many dying from hunger and mistreatment. The camps were created to avoid a repeat of the 19th-century population surge in Fortaleza. Today, the annual drought walk honors the victims of this dark chapter in Brazilian history.
