Characteristics of Reptiles

Reptiles, belonging to the class Reptilia, are vertebrate animals adapted to life on land. They possess water-tight skin covered with scales to prevent water loss and have well-developed lungs for breathing. Reptiles like lizards have strong legs for movement and are mostly carnivorous, using powerful jaws to capture prey. As ectothermic animals, they regulate their body temperature by basking in the sun or seeking shade. Unlike amphibians, reptiles can lay eggs on land due to the amniotic egg, which is water-tight and provides nourishment to the embryo. This adaptation allows them to thrive in diverse terrestrial environments.
