The Lakota emerged as a dominant power in the American West by controlling the Black Hills. They expanded westward, becoming skilled buffalo hunters and forming trade alliances with the US. Despite US attempts to acquire their lands, the Lakota resisted, maintaining their territory and culture. Conflicts arose as settlers encroached on their lands, leading to battles like the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The Lakota faced cultural suppression and massacres, but continued to resist, notably protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline in 2016.
