El Teniente is the world's largest underground copper mine, operated by Chile's state-owned Codelco. The mine has been expanding since 1905, with over 4,500 kilometers of tunnels. Future plans aim to extend its life by 50 years, recovering 2,000 million tons of copper. A $3.9 billion investment will ensure the production of 450,000 tons annually. Automation has modernized operations, with remote control from Rancagua. The expansion will add 2,020 million tons to Chile's reserves, maintaining its status as the world's top copper producer.
