Joao Doria of the PSDB won with 53% of the votes, while the outgoing mayor, Fernando Haddad of the PT, received 16%. The PT's decline is linked to corruption scandals, including the Petrobras case involving former president Lula da Silva. The party also lost control of key cities, retaining only Rio Branco. These elections are seen as a precursor to the 2018 presidential elections and are the first since Dilma Rousseff's impeachment.
