China has lowest number of births since 1961

In 2018, China recorded 15.23 million births, the lowest since 1961. The population was 1.395 billion. The low birth rate, combined with an aging population, poses economic challenges. China's one-child policy, in effect from 1979 to 2015, slowed population growth and created a gender imbalance. This has resulted in a large elderly population with fewer young workers. Despite recognizing the demographic challenges, China's response has been limited to marketing efforts to boost fertility rates.
