The Colombian government has advised couples to avoid pregnancies due to the Zika virus threat, which is linked to microcephaly in newborns. The country is experiencing an expansive phase of the infection, with over 11,000 confirmed cases and 2,000 suspected cases, primarily in the Caribbean region. The Zika virus is transmitted by female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which also carry dengue and chikungunya. Symptoms of the virus include fever, skin rashes, and joint pain.
