Juan Gelman, an acclaimed Argentinian poet, passed away at 83. Born in Buenos Aires in 1930, he spent over 20 years in Mexico City. Gelman was a prominent voice against the impunity of South American dictatorships in the 1970s. During Argentina's last dictatorship, he lost his son and daughter-in-law, who was pregnant and remains missing. In 2000, he found his granddaughter Macarena, born in a detention center. Gelman's notable poetry books include 'Violín y otras cuestiones' and 'Gotan'. He received the Cervantes Prize in 2007 and the Reina Sofía Award in 2005, weaving pain and commitment into his work.
