Harriet Jacobs: The Journey to Freedom

Harriet Jacobs, born into slavery in Edenton, NC, faced numerous challenges, including the loss of her parents and harassment by her owner, Doctor Norcom. Despite these hardships, she educated herself and eventually escaped, hiding in her grandmother's attic for seven years. After gaining freedom, she became an activist and author, writing 'Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl' to highlight the sexual abuse faced by enslaved women. Her work contributed significantly to the abolitionist movement, and she continued to support freed slaves and refugees until her death.
