As America reopens, a study by Chinese researchers highlights the risk of COVID-19 entering through the eyes. The American Academy of Ophthalmology notes cases where infections may have started in the eyes. Research published in JAMA and The Lancet shows the virus can infect and replicate in eye cells. The CDC suggests that viruses reaching ocular cells can easily spread to the lungs. To prevent infection, wearing glasses along with masks is recommended to protect against airborne droplets and reduce the risk of touching the eyes after contact with infected surfaces.
