The Islamic State group released hundreds of civilians used as human shields during their retreat from Manbij, a strategic city in northern Syria. This marks a significant defeat for ISIS, as Manbij was a key logistical base for sending fighters to Europe, where they claimed responsibility for several attacks. The city had been under ISIS control since 2014. Meanwhile, in Idleb province, controlled largely by rebels, at least 22 civilians, including children, were killed in airstrikes by the regime and its Russian ally, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
