Antonio Guterres presides over a conference in Geneva aimed at resolving the long-standing Cyprus conflict. The conference marks his first official trip as UN Secretary-General. It seeks to establish a federal state in Cyprus, with Greek and Turkish Cypriots exchanging maps for the first time since the island's division 42 years ago. If an agreement is reached, it will be put to a referendum. The island has been divided since a failed 1974 coup, with the Republic of Cyprus recognized by the EU in 2004, governing the south, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognized only by Turkey, governing the north.
