Russia has officially classified Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, as a terrorist and extremist organization. This classification includes Meta in a list with nationalist far-right groups, foreign terrorist organizations, and Russian opposition groups, paving the way for legal actions against its users. In March, Meta announced that its platforms might allow posts with messages like 'death to Russian invaders,' provided they don't contain credible threats against civilians, a policy later limited to users posting from Ukraine. Since March, Russians have been unable to access Instagram and Facebook without using VPNs. Instagram was a key platform for advertising and sales in Russia.
