In the early 19th century, Spain and Portugal faced distrust as Argentina and Uruguay were embroiled in civil wars. By 1862, Paraguay emerged as a regional force under Francisco Solano Lopez, forming alliances with Uruguay's Blanco Party. Tensions escalated when Brazil supported Uruguayan rebels, leading to Paraguay's war declaration. Despite initial advances, Paraguay faced setbacks as Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay allied against it. The Allies eventually advanced, capturing key territories and forcing Paraguay's retreat. By 1870, Paraguay suffered significant territorial and population losses, leading to decades of stagnation.
