SS Normandie Burns

A fire broke out on the former French luxury liner Normandy, which was being converted into the U.S. Navy Auxiliary ship Lafayette. The fire raged for four hours, with 1500 men aboard. Firefighters faced challenges as they battled the flames below decks. Rescue operations involved lifeboats and life ladders, with emergency medical teams treating 128 injuries. Unfortunately, one civilian worker died in a nearby hospital.
