Mae Beata de Imanjá, a revered Candomblé priestess and social activist in Brazil, passed away at 86. In her last interview, she expressed hopes for a respectful future for Brazil, beyond its stereotypes. She practiced Candomblé, a religion brought by African slaves, and fought against religious intolerance, racism, and violence against women. Her tejeigo in Nova Iguazú was a center for ceremonies. She believed in a fulfilling afterlife and left a lasting essence, as mourned by many Brazilians.
