Idi Amin rose to power in Uganda through a military coup in 1971. Initially welcomed, he promised democratic elections and reforms. However, his regime soon became notorious for human rights abuses, ethnic purges, and economic decline. Amin's brutal rule led to the deaths and disappearances of hundreds of thousands. He was eventually overthrown in 1979 by Ugandan exiles and the Tanzanian army, fleeing to Libya and later Saudi Arabia, where he died in 2003. Amin's dictatorship, though short-lived, left a lasting impact on Uganda, transforming it from a prosperous nation into one marked by chaos and poverty.
