Matilda Hughes: Fighting for Family

The video tells the story of Matilda Hughes, a black woman born into slavery in 1830. Her family fought for freedom, but she was sold to Edward McGee in Tennessee. Matilda endured harsh conditions, married Louis Hughes, and faced numerous challenges, including the loss of her children. During the Civil War, Matilda and Louis attempted to escape but were caught. After gaining freedom in 1865, Matilda searched for her lost family and eventually reunited with them. She and Louis built a successful life in Milwaukee, highlighting the importance of family reunification for formerly enslaved people.
