Sierra Leone is declared Ebola-free by the WHO after over six months of battling the epidemic that claimed nearly 4,000 lives. Celebrations ensued, but caution remains as the virus can persist in bodily fluids, especially semen, for up to nine months. Despite the declaration, new cases in neighboring Guinea necessitate continued vigilance. Liberia was also declared Ebola-free in September after a false start in May. The Ebola outbreak resulted in over 11,300 deaths among nearly 29,000 cases in central Africa.
