A tragic fire at a Guatemalan youth shelter resulted in the deaths of at least 20 girls and injuries to 41 others. The fire started after a group of girls set a mattress ablaze during a meal. Despite attempts to extinguish the fire, it spread rapidly. The shelter, which was overcrowded, housed children and adolescents under judicial orders due to domestic violence or street rescues. Previous complaints had been made about mistreatment and drug use at the facility. UNICEF condemned the incident, and the Human Rights Office in Guatemala called for the shelter's closure.
