Morning sickness, or nausea gravidarum, affects pregnant women at any time of day. It ranges from mild nausea to severe cases known as hyperemesis gravidarum, which can lead to serious health issues. The exact cause is unknown, but hormonal changes, particularly hCG, are believed to play a role. Other factors include estrogen, progesterone, hypoglycemia, and heightened smell sensitivity. An evolutionary theory suggests it protects against foodborne toxins. Symptoms usually ease by the second trimester.
