In late May 1949, Shanghai was China's largest city. The Nanking Shanghai campaign had severely weakened the nationalists, costing them 300,000 men and vital equipment. Despite retiring as president, Chiang Kai-shek called for continued resistance, predicting victory within three years. However, within five months, the entire Chinese mainland was overtaken.
