The suspension was imposed by FIFA due to a suspected unauthorized payment of nearly two million euros to Michel Platini, former president of the Union of European Football Associations. Initially, both Vlater and Platini were suspended for eight years, but their penalties were reduced upon appeal. Vlater's suspension was reduced to six years, while Platini's was reduced to four years.
