VOICED : Peru primer productor de coca

Peru has overtaken Colombia as the leading producer of coca leaves, despite reducing its cultivation by over 3% between 2011 and 2012. The UN report highlights that Peru had 60,400 hectares of coca cultivation by the end of the previous year, compared to Colombia's 48,000 hectares. Although Peru is now the top producer, the situation is different from the late 1990s when coca plantations reached 135,000 hectares. Coca leaves are primarily used for cocaine production, with most of Peru's output going to drug trafficking, while the rest is used traditionally in the Andes.
