In Ecuador, the heads of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces and the prison system resigned amid a severe prison crisis. President Guillermo Lazo accepted their resignations during a meeting with government and defense ministers, as well as military and police chiefs, to address the ongoing situation. The crisis includes a recent massacre of 68 inmates in Guayaquil's main penitentiary, following a previous incident in September that resulted in 119 deaths. In response to the violence linked to narcotrafficking, Lazo declared a State of Exception on October 18, deploying military forces to support police in maintaining order.
