Hans, after years of service, receives a gold reward and begins his journey home. Along the way, he trades the gold for a horse, the horse for a cow, the cow for a pig, the pig for a goose, and finally the goose for a grindstone. Each trade seems advantageous at first, but Hans ends up with a grindstone, which he accidentally drops into a well. Relieved of the burden, Hans feels free and happy, believing he is lucky despite losing everything.
