Antarctica, the southernmost continent, is an ice-covered landmass surrounding the geographic South Pole. It is classified as a desert due to minimal precipitation, mostly snow. The Antarctic ice sheet holds over 70% of Earth's fresh water. Despite harsh conditions, it hosts diverse wildlife, including penguins, seals, and whales. Around 30 countries maintain research stations, with a population of about 4,000. Antarctica is unique as it is not owned by any country and is dedicated to scientific research. The largest recorded iceberg, B-15, broke off from the Ross Ice Shelf in 2000.
