A human chain protest took place in Caracas to oppose violence in Venezuela. A report by the Caracas Metropolitan Observatory of Citizen Security highlighted 2011 as the bloodiest year in recent Venezuelan history, with high rates of homicides and kidnappings. Of the 19,000 homicides in Venezuela in 2011, nearly 3,500 occurred in Caracas. The Venezuelan government has not released 2011 homicide figures but acknowledged that the national count did not decrease from 14,000 in 2010. A UN global homicide study ranked Venezuela as having the highest homicide rate in South America and the fourth highest in the Americas, following Honduras, El Salvador, and Jamaica.
